Following the declaration of war by Britain and France on Russia in 1854, the allied armies landed in the Crimea to lay siege to Sevastopol. The cities of Europe were already interconnected by the electric telegraph and a submarine cable had been laid across the Black Sea to Balaklava in the Crimea. To carry the cable forward on land, twenty-five men from the Royal Corps of Sappers commanded by a Royal Engineer officer were trained by the Electric Telegraph Company to construct and operate the first Field Electric Telegraph. The man-hauled plough was used to lay a light copper cable insulated with gutta percha resin for underground and underwater use. By the end of the campaign in September 1855, when Sevastopol finally fell to the allied armies, 21 miles of cable had been laid and eight telegraph offices were in circuit, and the news was telegraphed to London and Paris.
