Uzbekistan was a part of the Soviet Union and known as the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic from 1924 until it gained independence in 1991 when it became the Republic of Uzbekistan. The photograph shows fountains in front of an administrative building in Lenin Square (now Independence Square or Mustaqillik Maydoni in Uzbek). This square was the largest city square in the former Soviet Union.
