Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), US author, editor and poet. Poe is most famous for his short stories of horror and mystery. His best known stories include 'The Fall of the House of Usher', 'The Masque of the Red Death', 'The Pit and the Pendulum' and the poems 'Tamerlane' and 'The Raven'. Poe was also a literary critic and essayist, publishing works such as 'The Philosophy of Composition' (1846) and 'The Poetic Principle' (1848). This daguerreotype dates from late May to early June 1849, only a few months before his death in mysterious circumstances. It is thought to have been arranged by Annie Richmond, a married woman that Poe corresponded with following the death of his wife a few years earlier. Poe's contemporaries described him as 'darkly handsome and intelligent' with an 'unorthodox personality'. His appearance here has been described as 'disheveled, brooding, exhausted, haunted, and melancholic'.
