A nearby plaque reads: 'SECTION OF THE / BERLIN WALL / Change Your Life by the graffiti artist, Indiano / The Berlin Wall was erected by the East German / security forces in August 1961 to seal off the / East German sector of Berlin from the West. / On 9 November 1989 the East Germans began / taking down the wall, ending the harsh restrictions / on civilian movement between East and West Berlin. / Over 80 people died between 1961 and 1989 / attempting to escape over the wall into West Germany. / This section of the Berlin Wall came from near / the Brandenburg Gate and was acquired by the / Imperial War Museum in January 1991.'
