Bruised penis and scrotum of a 59-year-old man seen a week after laparoscopic surgery to repair an inguinal hernia. An inguinal hernia is a weakness in the groin wall that allows structures from the body cavity to protrude into the groin region. The groin wall can be tightened by surgery. Bruises are caused by blood released beneath the skin by ruptured capillaries. As the blood is broken down by the body it turns first dark purple then yellow. Such bruises usually clear up naturally after several days.
