Jasper Springs is located on the Augusta road, about two miles fromthe city and is noted as being the scene of the bold exploits of SergeantsJasper and Newton, previous to the siege of Savannah. Sergeant Jas-per, after his gallantry at Fort Moultrie, was granted a roving commissionby Colonel Moultrie, commanding the Second South Carolina Regiment,with the privilege of reforming his own command.
