Fig. Female Gnat {Culex Pipiena) at rest. In Brachycera the antennee are comparatively short, very often consisting of only three joints of unequalsize, from the last of which a bristle or delicate featherusually springs (see PI. XIV., 6, a; XV., 4, a; XVL,3, a, o, a). The antennae sometimes are longer andhave more joints (see PI. XIV., 2, a, i, a)—sometimesas many as ten—but these, after the third, are usuallymore or less consolidated into one, and have a characterdifferent from that of the distinctly articulated antennsein Nemocera (see fig. above). By far the greaternumber of Flies belong to Brachycera. In the small section Hypocera, the antennae muchresemble those of the Brachycera, but aie diflferentlyplaced, being low down and close to the mouth. Thecharacter of the mouth, in which the lancets are notdeveloped, with some other characters to be named in theirplace, also help to distinguish it from Brachycera. The wings in Brachycera are usually characterized bythe posterior nerves f
