King penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) breeding and nesting colony at Salisbury Plains in the Bay of Isles, South Georgia, Southern Ocean. MORE INFO The king penguin is the second largest species of penguin at about 90 cm (3 ft) tall and weighing 11 to 16 kg (24 to 35 lb), second only to the emperor penguin. The total population is estimated to be million pairs and is increasing. The king penguin was described in 1778 by English naturalist and illustrator John Frederick Miller.
