Macquarie House in Cameron Street, Launceston, Tasmania, was recently restored. It was used as a warehouse in 1830 and is one of the city's oldest buildings. The historic house was inappropriately named in the 1920s after an early Governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie, The house had a number of ownerships over the years. During the 1950s’ A famous actor, Max Oldaker, whilst in London, took over one of the leading roles of Professor Henry Higgins from Rex Harrison in the stage production of ‘My Fair Lady’. Max later returned to Launceston to look after his elderly parents in their cottage just behind Macquarie House.
