Anti-riot police barred No-Sarkozy-Day demonstrators during a demonstration in Paris, on march 23, 2010.
On March 23, 2010, several workers unions called for strike and demonstration in France to protest against government policy and to influence the social agenda announced by Nicolas Sarkozy and defend pensions. Also, many professionals seized the opportunity to express their discontentment about deteriorating economic conditions. In Paris, demonstrators marched from Place de la République to Place de la Nation. At the end of the demonstration, a small group of less than 20 protesters wearing "No Sarkozy Day" purple T-shirts were barred from Place de la Nation, the ending point of the parade, by anti-riot police. They decided to sit in the street to protest against this arbitrary decision, as they were demonstrating peacefully. After about an hour of negociation with police officials, anti-riot policemen charged and the demonstrators were arrested. All of them were released 2 or 3 hours later, without any official explanation to their arrest.
