A CTA Brown Line train snaking its way through a pair of tight curves on elevated tracks in the River North neighborhood on Chicago's near north side just prior to entering the city's famous Loop. The Loop actually derives its name from the configuration of downtown elevated train structures. The elevated structures above four downtown streets form a rectangle or loop which gave rise to the famous name. Originally only those things that fell inside the rectangle were considered to be "in the Loop," however that area has been expanded over time to include a greater area often associated with Chicago's entire downtown region.
