Editorial use only. This image may not be used to state or imply endorsement by CERN of any product, activity or service Aerial photograph of the facilities at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory on the outskirts of Geneva. The dotted outline indicates the position of the underground Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator. The main CERN site is where the dotted lines diverge at right. Beyond the SPS can be seen Geneva airport, Geneva itself & Lac Leman, & the French Alps in the distance. The SPS can accelerate beams of protons up to an energy of 400 GeV & fire them at a fixed target; or, in the most advanced experiments, it can bring counter-rotating beams of protons & antiprotons to collide at energies of up to 400 GeV per beam.
