The Cutwaly Gate, The Kotwali Darwaza, the central gate in the south wall of the ruined city of Gaur ('kotwal' = the city's chief of police). The gate disintegrated in the earthquake of 1897. Gaur (also known as Lakhnauti) was an ancient capital of Bengal, originally Hindu, later held by Islamic rulers; it was abandoned in the late sixteenth century. Image taken from The ruins of Gaur.
