It should be usedin addition to treatment with mer-cury, and no patient should betreated for syphilis without salvar-san being used in any and all stagesof the disease, according to theviews of the writer, as previouslymentioned. If I have conveyed any new im-pression of thought relative to themodern aspect of the etiology andtreatment of syphilis, then I feelrewarded for the effort used in writing this Eighth TREPANNING IN THE STONE AGE Evidence that surgical operations were done with a blunt instru-ment by prehistoric man was recently given by Prof. Guyon in theAcademy of Sciences of Paris. A large tomb, dating from the pol-ished stone age, has been discovered at Bengy, in the Department ofthe Seine-et-Marne. One hundred and thirty skeletons were ex-amined ; and many facts entirely new to science are said to have beendiscovered. Many of the bones show traces of surgical operations,which must have been carried out by flint instruments. Some ofthem have indications of fractures that have been treated and cured;and more than one of the skulls had been trepanned.
