On the other hand, they may be said to constitute little worlds apart in virtue of their highly characteristic flora and fauna. Lord Howe, 2,800 feet high, has been inhabited since 1840 by a few families, who get a living by supplying passing vessels with provisions. But they do not appear to prosper, judging at least from the emigration, by which the little community has been reduced from three hundred to some forty souls.
