No picture of the social life of the first period of our his-tory would be complete without some reference to the tav-erns which were kept in all parts of the country from the ear-liest days of its history. These institutions sprang up alongall the public roads, and in the town of Charlotte after number of persons always passing through this sectionto the South must have been considerable, even as early as1760. The tavern was a place where such travelers could.
