GOVERNESS -A collection of British press cuttings showing their varied lifestyles. The terms governess and nanny were interchangeable, though much depended on what degree she was educated. Though sometimes considered part of the family, others were confined to their own room & suffered loneliness due to the rules of their employment. In larger households where they were largely resented and rejected by other servants. They were in essence a servant, though some sought to elevate their own positions due to their own social class and background which was often way above that of other servants.
