Father Etienne de Carheil, who suc-ceeded to the mission in 1686, raised his voice in vig-orous protest to the Governor-General Frontenacagainst the greed and lust of the traders, the garrisons,and their commanders. The appointment as com-mander of the St. Ignace post of Sieur Antoine dela Motte Cadillac increased these evils. Comte deFrontenac died in 1698 and was succeeded by LouisHector de Calli^res, who granted Cadillac permissionIX.—44.
