Less warlike than the Zulus and not of suchfine physique, the Amatonga or Maputas, as they are alsocalled, are more intelligent and more industrious, skilfulwith their hands, cultivating the ground to a much largerextent than the Zulus, and also going forth to work in Natal,the gold-fields, or at Delagoa Bay. Mealies or maize, millet,and ground-nuts are the chief articles of food, and palmwine is extracted from the trunks of the wild palms. Cattlethrive in the land but not horses, and wild game of variouskinds was, till recent times, to be found in the trade of the country has been hitherto principallywith Delagoa Bay. Tongaland is now administered as part of the district ofIngwavuma in the Province of Darbishire & Stanford L*^ Oxford. CHAPTER IV THE THAN SVAAll The Transvaal is bounded on the north by SouthernRhodesia, on the west by the Bechuanaland Protectorateand Cape Colony, on the south by the Orange River Colonyand Natal, and on the east by Portuguese East Africa andSwaziland. Its area is about 111,000 square miles, or ratherless than that of the United Kingdom. Stretching fromabout 22° to 30° south latitude, the Transvaal penetrates atits extreme north into the torrid zone, and would, in theordinary course of things, be a sub-tropical country. Infact, however, its high level above the sea causes its tempera-ture to be lower than it would otherwise be.
