Trans-Alaska oil pipeline. This pipeline transports crude oil across Alaska, USA. It stretches from oilfields on the North Slope to the port at Valdez, where the oil is shipped to refineries in the continental United States. The pipeline is over 1200 kilometres long, about metres across, and crosses over 800 rivers and streams along its route. A major part of the pipeline is over ground, supported by stilts that use a cooling system to prevent it from sinking into the permafrost layer.
