At first, a small portion of the mucous mem-brane, perhaps only a line or two in extent, is found thickened anddeprived of its natural elasticity; and perhaps contracted so as to form asharp fold, as if it had been tied with a thread. But in old neglected PERMANENT STRICTURE. 459 145*. cases, the canal with the corpus spongiosum around may become convertedinto a thick, gristly, cartilaginous mass several inches in extent. Its mostfrequent situation is just at the commencementof the membranous portion of the urethra; but itis also very commonly found in the anterior por-tion of the canal, especially at the distance offour inches from the orifice. The causes are re-peated gonorrhoea, intemperance, and unhealthyconditions of the urine. Symptoms.—In what may be called the Jirststage, the patient finds that he wants to makewater oftener than usual, and that he has moreor less uneasy sensation in the perinseum afterdoing so ; he also notices that a few drops hangin the urethra, and dribble from him after he hasbuttoned up.
