Desertification in the old kingdom of Amdo on the Tibetan Plateau. Inhabited by nomadic Tibetans, ethnic Khampa and Golok people, the grasslands have been experiencing big changes in recent years; forced migration programs, overgrazing and global warming and the introduction of noxious pests seeing grass stocks diminish and desertification to appear. The Chinese government has other plans for the vast landscape of eastern Tibet, including gas exploration and large scale farming of barley and wheat- although it is unsure if the environment is able to cope with such crops. Over 4500 meters, much of the area remains frozen for 6-9 months a year.
