Vagadia Rabari Lady, Kutch

Kutch is a large district in North-West Gujarat, with a population of only 2 million. It is inhabited by a variety of ethnic groups who have managed to preserve their traditions. Vagadia Rabari lead a nomadic life, whereas they live with their animals in villages. Women are dressed in a long black woolen shawl called lobadi, which they use to cover their heads. Young women adorn their shawl with deep red circular designs, made with the tie-and-dye method. They also add mirror motifs and embroidery to decorate the borders at the edges. The actual dress consists of a black cotton blouse with brocade work and a woolen skirt.
