The Northridge earthquake of 17 January 1994 (4:30am) caused extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure. The Northridge quake was a moment magnitude blind thrust earthquake that occurred in the San Fernando Valley region of the City of Los Angeles. The quake had a duration of approximately 10Ð20 seconds, and its peak ground acceleration of g was the highest ever instrumentally recorded in an urban area in North America.
