'Siege of Sebastopol. Near Entrance of the French into the Town', c1850s. French troops at the Siege of Sebastopol, (modern-day Sevastopol in the Ukraine), a strategic Russian port on the Black Sea. The siege, undertaken by the French, Ottoman and British, lasted from October 1854 until September 1855 and was the final episode in the Crimean War.
