Artificial hips. X-ray of a patient with two artificial hips, with parts of the prosthesis seen on top of the X-ray. The heads of the prosthetic implants are in their sockets in the hip bone of the pelvis. The shafts of the implants are embedded in holes drilled in the shafts of the femurs (thigh bones). The heads of the implants have replaced the heads of the femurs, which have been removed. This operation restores mobility to those affected by conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis.
