Major General Groves and Brigadier General Farrell
Major General Leslie R. Groves (left), head of the Manhattan Project, the American program to develop and build the first atomic bomb during World War Two. On the right is his assistant Brigadier General Thomas F. Farrell. The project, which cost 2000 million dollars, was undertaken by the War Department and correlated the work of a multinational team of engineers and scientists. They worked under conditions of strictest secrecy from 1943 to 1945 at a remote makeshift laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
