For a time he taughtschool at Loudoun county, Virginia. He was amember of the Virginia militia at the time ofJohn Browns raid at Harpers Ferry, one ofthe Jefferson Guards, Second Virginia Regi-ment, and his company did guard duty duringthe imprisonment, trial and execution ofBrown and his party at Charlestown.
