ROYAL AIR FORCE 1939-1945: FIGHTER COMMAND - Mustang III of No 19 Squadron, based at Ford, in flight, 21 April 1944. It wears the standard Mustang recognition markings of white spinner, nose and wing bands. Production of the Allison-engined Mustang I and II was halted in mid-1943 to make way for the Merlin-powered Mk III. The new Mustang was designed for the air-superiority role, and finally gave both the USAAF and RAF a single-seat fighter that combined excellent high-altitude performance with an outstanding range (combat radius was 750 miles with drop-tanks). , Royal Air Force, 19 Squadron
