Monument to the Discoveries are visited by millions of people every year. Cut into the paving stone is the compass which was given as a present from South Africa in 1960. The central map depicting galleons and mermaids shows the routres of the discoverers in the 15th and 16th centuries. The monument itself and the statues look particularly impressive late afternoon early evening with the lowering sun casting shadows over the structure.
