Fertilised egg. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of a fertilised human egg or zygote. Known as the primitive embryo, this one cell zygote is seen a day after fertilisation by a single sperm. The zygote has microvilli on its outer surface. It contains all the genetic material inherited from the father's sperm and the mother's ovum. It is preparing for its first mitotic (cell) division. In pregnancy, the zygote travels along the woman's fallopian tube and divides to form a ball of cells known as a blastocyst. The blastocyst implants in the uterus wall and develops into a human foetus. Magnification: x830 at 6x7cm size. Mag.: x1,000 at 4x5\; 2,400 at 8x10\" size, and 750 at original 6x7cm size."
