Artist/engraver/cartographer: Guillaume de l'Isle. Provenance: The map was extracted from a composite atlas of early 18th century maps, the latest of which was dated c1754. Type: Large antique 18th century atlas map, printed on thick, good quality paper with original outline hand colour/color . This eighteenth century map shows southern and central Africa, divided between "Congo ou Basse Guinee" (Congo or Lower Guinea) et "Cafrerie ou Pays Cafres" (Kaffir country/Kaffraria), with the Indian Ocean Islands of Madagascar, "Isle de Bourbon ou Mascarin" (now Reunion) and Isle Maurice (Mauritius), the Comoros, and the Amirante Islands. The map covers the present day countries of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Angola, Tanzania, The Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mobasa, Zanzibar and Pemba island are marked, along with Dutch East India Company fort in what is now Cape Town, the Castle of Good Hope.
