Wooden ceremonial headdress; Scope and content: This wooden carving is a ceremonial headdress made to be worn by the principal performer in an Efe/ Gelede ritual. The artist is Etobe of Ketu in the Republic of Benin. The lower part is a face with a complex headdress structure, topped with two birds facing front and back, each with a diamond-patterned snake in its beak. Four sheathed knives, elaborately patterned, hang from the encircling band. The mask was a gift to Lyndon B. Johnson from His Excellency Leopold Sedar Senghor, President of Senegal.
