The second New Hampshire turnpike passes through nearthe centre of the town. Francestown is eligibly situated, but h;is norailroad as yet running within its limits. The town has a handsomevillage, a Congregational meeting-house, an academy, established in1819, twelve school districts, one post-office, and one bank, having acapital of .$60,000. Population, 1,114; valuation, 6536, Francoxia, Grafton county, joins Bethlehemon the north, and is seventy-fom- miles nortii fromConcord. It was originally called Morristown,and was granted February 14, 1764, to IsaacSearle and others, and incorporated at the sametime, the first settlement being commenced in1774 by Captain Artemas Knight, LemuelBarnett, Zebedee Applebee, and others. Thesurface is very mountainous; but, along thebranches of the Lower Ammonoosuc, whichwater the town, is some very fertile meadow land. Among the natural curiosities are tlie Franconia Notch, a narrow pass between JNIonntLafayette and Profile or Jackson mountain, and what is called theOld JMan of the Mountain, declared the greatest curiosity in thestate. At the height of one thousand feet, on a nearly perpendic-ular part of the rock which terminates one of the cliffs of Jack-son mountain, is seen the profile of the human face, formed by apeculiar combination of the surface and angles of fi
