Grey sky view American Flag above ornate entrance to gold dome Wyoming State Capitol Building, Capitol Avenue, Cheyenne, USA

The Wyoming State Capitol was constructed 1886-90, and further improved in 1917. Cheyenne, named after the Cheyenne Indian Nation, one of the most famous and prominent Great Plains tribes, was founded in 1867 at a crossing of the Union Pacific Railroad at Crow Creek, a tributary of the South Platte River. The Union Pacific Railroad reached Cheyenne on 13 November 1867, when the town's population was 4000.
