Particle plumes from Bennu asteroid, OSIRIS-REx image. The Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft launched in 2016 and arrived at the asteroid 101955 Bennu in December 2018. As well as obtaining samples for return to Earth in 2023, it is studying the asteroid. This view of particles being ejected from the asteroid's surface on 19 January 2019 was created by combining a short-exposure image and a long-exposure image taken by the NavCam 1 imager. This mission, part of the NASA New Frontiers programme, is being carried out by NASA and the University of Arizona.
