Flowers without petals but sepals colored, forming a tube or bell, in clusters of 3 to 5 with a saucer-like bract beneath. A form of this species, sometimes classed as a separate species, Oxybaphus pilosus, has narrower leaves and the lower portions of the stem and leaves almost hairless except just under the nodes of the stem.
