The roots are much improved by frost; to be dug up as required. On the approach of cold weather, cover them heavily with manure or litter. Deep, rich, heavy soil is best suited to the culture of Parsnips, and the roots will be smooth and large if no fresh manure is used; this tends to make them coarse-grained and misshapen.
