Water flows from the settling basin over thefilter, and stands four feet deep while being it slowly passes down through four feet of sandand one foot of gravel. Then the pure water is collectedunderneath by pipes, and carried to a reservoir. Thediagram on the next page shows a section through. Interior of Filter a filter. The upper layer of sand filters out most ofthe coarse particles, so that the filters have to be keptclean. About once a month the upper inch of sandis scraped off, and about once a year the rest of thesand is taken out, washed, and replaced.
