Under the pedestrian bridge is one of two relief sculptures entitled ‘Man’s Struggle’ carved by Walter Ritchie. Coventry was among the first of Britain's cities to be redeveloped in the post-war years. The city was heavily bombed in the World War II, even its historic Cathedral was all but destroyed in 1940. In the 1950s and 60s the City was totally transformed. The new Upper and Lower Precincts were built in the 1950s. The 'Man's Struggle’ carvings were unveiled in 1959 and faced each other over a pool of water under the pedestrian bridge. In the early 1990s, when the Precinct was refurbished, the two works of art were removed. They were put on display outside the Herbert Gallery in 1994.
