Illustration of the US chemist Richard F Heck (1931-2015). Heck is best known for his work on cross-coupling reactions, where two molecules are joined together with the aid of a metal catalyst. In 1968 he created the Heck reaction, which uses the metal palladium to catalyse the binding of organic molecules. Heck was awarded a share of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Akira Suzuki and Ei-ichi Negishi for his work on palladium-catalysed cross-couplings.
