Body broad-ovate, very strongly compressed, all its out-lines sharply trenchant; head very gibbous above the eyes, itsanterior profile vertical; lateral line strongly arched, its posteriorportion with very weak shields; scales minute; soft dorsal andanal extremely low, not falcate. Young much deeper than theadult, all the fins higher, resembling the next genus. Warmseas; 3 species in our waters. The first of these is K. dorsal hcrsefish, a rare species said to occur on the west coast ofAfrica, about the Cape Verde Islands, and in the West Indies. 309 Moon-fish; Jorobado. Moonfish; Jorobado Vome) setipinnis (Mitchill) This species is found on both coasts of tropical America, fromBrazil to Maine, and Peru to Cape San Lucas. It is generallycommon southward, only the young usually coming northwardin the Gulf Stream. It reaches a length of nearly a foot, and isan excellent little food-fish. Colour, greenish above, golden or silvery below; young witha black blotch at origin of straight part of lateral line. Corcobado Vomer gabonetisis Guichenot The corcobado is a fish that was but little known until therecent investigations by the U. S. Fish Commission in Porto Rico,when numerous specimens were obtained, it is now known fromBrazil, San Domingo, Jamaica, and Porto Rico; also from thewest coast of Africa.
