At last the locomotive is ^^afe from theonslaught of electric motors, compressedair machines, and by the use of central ex-haust cylinders all that is desired in theway of high speed and economy can beobtained—if the claims of the patenteescan be proven. The illustration will showthf peculiarities of the engine, the extralong cylinders and steam chest being thedistinguishing features. The engine is a 21 by 28 the cylinders are 72 inches long, andthe valve chest 82 inches long, outsidemeasurement, while it is over 10 feet fromcenter of front driver to center of truck. It bears the patent plate of the Cleve-land-Peterson Company, who have beenexperimenting on the Intercolonial Rail-road for some time, and who have at lastinduced the road to order a new enginewith this contraption. This coming engine is the central ex-haust scheme of the Cleveland-Peterson. CYUNUER AND VALVE OF CENTRAL EXHAUSTLOCOMOTIVE. Company, who have been experimentingon the Intercolonial Railroad for sometmie past, and who have just had a fineconsolidation built at Baldwins. It is afine-looking engine, and even the oddityof the extra long cylinders will not beconsidered—if it does all that is claimed. In reality it is the old Roberts centralexhaust with the exception that it has twoexhaust ports in the center instead of one—to have something to patent, or theclaims wouldnt have been , the oil well dynamiter, whocoaxed reluctant wells to give up theiroily treasure with the mild persuasion ofa dynamite cartridge, got the idea in about1870, and had one made which was triedon the Lake Shore road and which isntbeing used to-day. Further comments areunnecessary. One of the patentees was explaining thebeauties of the device to an old engineer, wlio had just remarke
