Normal and slipped disc. Artwork showing a normal (top) and slipped (bottom) disc in the backbone, seen from above. The rear of the backbone (with protruding processes), and the spinal cord and spinal nerves (both orange) are at bottom in each view. The intervertebral discs (green) are located between and cushion the vertebrae (white), the blocks of bone that form the backbone. When one of these discs ruptures, the fluid and displaced tissue can put pressure on the nearby nerves, causing pain (yellow, lower left). The condition usually gets better with rest, but severe cases may need surgery.
