New companies arose, and as competi-tion came into play, the gas fell in price, and, from its superiorcheapness and excellence as an illuminating power, gradually madeits way wherever there was the means of its introduction. Since the first gas-pipes were laid down, London has more thandoubled itself in extent, but the gas-mains have kept pace with itsenormous growth,
