FRIEDREICHS ATAXIA 419 Sections were examined from the left radial, left ulnar, leftmedian, posterior interosseous, external and internal plantar, andanterior tibial nerves; they are greatly degenerated, and the fiberspreserved are not unusually small. Sections were taken from the following muscles: extensorcommunis digitorum, tibialis anticus, extensor proprius hallucis, from the plantar region, including the interossei, abductor minimidigiti, thenar and hypothenar eminences, extensor primi internodiipollicis, and extensor secundi internodii pollicis. The muscles show considerable alteration. Many of themuscle fibers are atrophied, the sarcolemma nuclei are increasedin number, the transverse striation in some is indistinct, as is alsothe longitudinal striation to some extent, and some fibers have a. The fibers of the extensor propriushallucis are larger than those of other muscles. IMuscle from thehypothenar and thenar eminences stained by the Marchi methodshows many fibers with small black dots in lines within the musclefibers, indicating recent degeneration. This is present only inmoderate intensity in the tibialis anticus muscle.
