SYMBOLS - ALCHEMY - ALCHEMICAL GOLD - WOLF - KING Alchemical plate from Michael Maier, Atalanta Fugiens, 1618. This is the 24th plate in the series; the Latin text tells us that Regem lupus voravit & vitae crematus reddidit [The wolf eats the King, and restores to life the cremated.] The King, who personifies the Gold of the Philosophers - which is by no means ordinary metallic gold - is devoured by he dissolvent power of Mercury, to be reborn even more powerful. In the background, we see this born king, lately cremated in the fire, stepping from the flames with renewed vigour.
