Insects are the most species-rich and abundant group of multicellular organisms ever to have evolved on our planet. They were among the first animals to appear on land and the first to take to the air. They are essential to the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems yet we pay them little heed. If we truly care about biodiversity and ignore insects we are wasting our time. Before it is too late, we need to realise that insects hold the key to our survival. George McGavin is an author, academic and well known television presenter. His programme credits include Expedition Borneo, Lost Land of the Jaguar, Lost Land of the Volcano, Lost Land of the Tiger, Prehistoric Autopsy, Miniature Britain, Ultimate Swarms, Monkey Planet and the multi-award winning documentary After Life: the strange science of decay. The Oak: nature’s greatest survivor was shown on BBC4 in October 2015 and won a Royal Television Society Award and a Grierson Award. George is a regular presenter on BBC’s The One Show and has written numerous books on insects and other animals. In 2018, he became the President of the Dorset Wildlife Trust. McGavin was a presenter for the BBC and Discovery Channel US series Expedition Borneo (2007), and was co-presenter of the BBC series Expedition, for which he has conducted three expeditions: Lost Land of the Jaguar (2008), Lost Land of the Volcano (2009), and Lost Land of the Tiger, in Bhutan (2010).He is also a regular contributor to The One Show (BBC1) and has appeared on the Richard & Judy show to cook and eat was Series Consultant and a contributor on Infested (Granada/ITV, 2002) and was the Chief Scientific Consultant for the David Attenborough series Life in the Undergrowth. His other TV appearances include What's up Doc? (STV), Tomorrow's World (BBC), Package Holiday Undercover (ITV), Facing the Music (BBC), Take One Museum (Channel 4) and various national and local news programmes.
