Through it the unjust privileges, the perplexing irreg-ularities, and the local differences were abolished, and the peo-ple admitted to a share in the government. This vast reformhad been accomplished without serious disturbance and, withthe exception of some of the changes in the Church, it hadbeen welcomed with enthusiasm by the French nation. This permanent, peaceful revolution, or reformation, was fol-lowed by a second revolution of unprecedented violence, whichfor a time destroyed the French monarchy. It also intro-duced a series of further changes, many of which were absurdand unnecessary and could not endure since they were approved.
