Y., theregaining much of that experienceand practical knowledge of therequirements of a country dry-goods trade which afterwardcontributed so largely to his success in removed to New York city in 1867, where heat once went into the wholesale drjr-goods busi-ness, in which he very soon made himself knownand felt. He was a member of the firm of P. VanVolkenburg & Co., and of Van Volkenburg, Beach& Co., from 1873 to 1879, and has been a memberof the present firm of Teflt, Weller & Co., since thelatter date. Beyond the sound constitution inheritedfrom his parents, and the early school advantageshis parents were enabled by a wise economy to givehim, Mr. Beachs present high standing is in no wisethe result of fortuitous circumstances. A manly. self-reliance was taught him with his A B Cs, andhe very early apprehended, and has ever since cher-ished, the truth that true success in life lies in an un-tiring activity tempered by a calm judgment, anddirected and controlled by principles of the strictestprobity, in private as well as in business and sociallife; and every stage of his career has illustrated thepower and attractiveness of a character built uponsnch lines.
